I'm thrilled to finally see a light at the end of the tunnel with recent announcements of Broadway's September reopening, and now locally, <a href="http://BroadwayAtTheNational.com" target="_blank">DC's National Theatre</a> has announced it's upcoming season beginning this December - and it's a good one! It includes the returning favorite, RENT, and my personal favorite, Come From Away! I held onto some optimism when I heard Broadway would open by summer, by Labor Day, then eventually, by...sometime next year. My season tickets for touring productions all hang in limbo and the new seasons that local theatres announced with certainty have become wishful thinking.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The good, the bad, and the crazy have all happened this year. On occasion, I've had to ask myself "did that really happen this year?" Some things feel like a lifetime ago.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">While not the theatre-packed summary of years past, here's my breakdown of the year:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">January</h3><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLDX2HbAyDYj-Ne0Ek4QvB4P-2MuKy8fZUr_JO71yoe_SLNL6OSZm1ZZnleq7WxHlzvcPMBJpXJLEED7sh7S0iT4lgRwqVL26RkX3gLaUPAlE-qUAGPZkLUwzK2B7ss4WkbOd7VRJYvys/s3264/IMG_20200101_192413.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLDX2HbAyDYj-Ne0Ek4QvB4P-2MuKy8fZUr_JO71yoe_SLNL6OSZm1ZZnleq7WxHlzvcPMBJpXJLEED7sh7S0iT4lgRwqVL26RkX3gLaUPAlE-qUAGPZkLUwzK2B7ss4WkbOd7VRJYvys/w640-h480/IMG_20200101_192413.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I marked the first day of the year the best way I knew how: in the audience! I enjoyed a production of <i>Murder on the Orient Express</i> at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre. Sean even joined me! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">To keep up the theatre momentum I saw one of my top least favorite shows on tour: <i>Cats</i>. <b>Thoughts:</b><br />
<i>Bandstand </i>caught my eye when it was on Broadway in 2017, but sadly had a short run and closed before I was able to get to NYC to see it. Fathom Events screened the show in select movie theatres in 2018. I was able to satisfy my curiosity, but screenings can never quite capture the energy of seeing a live production. I'm so glad the production is now touring and was close enough for me to see it live!<br />
<br />
I have a few go-to theatre companions, but for <i><a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/bandstand/" target="_blank">Bandstand</a></i>, I brought along my military-loving, musical-hating husband because I was curious how he would feel about this kind of show. The story discusses the unique issues our troops and their loved ones face, but it's also the story of forming a band to win a competition. The two sides of the story provide both upbeat and sobering moments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9cWfKwQmQM-z28qZ9nQrd5LmRj94y1AkRnJ4qot1zZnNfU2h0_oKkDwz-WY0XGRaGOHtm1maty7SpfTVOmaY1ML70I4HyWYQ02N_FTtnS3AMaQuN4DQfiUVTpM-whhj1Ak4RysPZpO8s/s1600/13.-Bandstand-First-National-Tour-Photo-by-Jeremy-Daniel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9cWfKwQmQM-z28qZ9nQrd5LmRj94y1AkRnJ4qot1zZnNfU2h0_oKkDwz-WY0XGRaGOHtm1maty7SpfTVOmaY1ML70I4HyWYQ02N_FTtnS3AMaQuN4DQfiUVTpM-whhj1Ak4RysPZpO8s/s640/13.-Bandstand-First-National-Tour-Photo-by-Jeremy-Daniel.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
At the end of Act I, I asked Sean what his thoughts were and all he had to say was "the <a href="https://amzn.to/39najqz" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">music </a>is uninspiring." He wasn't feeling it. I didn't even have the chance to ask him how he felt after the finale; he immediately spoke up and told me how much better it was!<br />
<br />
His assessment is pretty fair. <i>Bandstand </i>is a sneaky show, sprinkling in moments of truth throughout. It makes things feel slow at times, but when they finally come and punch the audience with the truth bomb just before the finale...let's just say I think the applause after that number went on longer than the applause for curtain call! It's the piece that brings all the moments of the show together, but you have to wait for it. I promise, it's worth the wait (also, there are a few other <a href="https://amzn.to/39najqz" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">standout numbers</a> throughout the show IMO).<br />
<br />
Washington, DC is the perfect city to see a show like <i>Bandstand</i>. The show is in town only until Sunday, but I love how show and city have embraced each other. The National Theatre has offered discounted tickets for veterans, many of whom I saw at opening night, and the actors took a moment after curtain call to thank all military and their families in the audience. It's not an experience to be missed; <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/bandstand/" target="_blank">grab your tickets</a> while Bandstand is still in town!</div>

<i>Bandstand </i>caught my attention but had a short Broadway run, closing before I could make it to NYC to see it. I was able to see a screening of it at a movie theater, but we all know live shows are best seen live! The tour will be in DC Tuesday, March 3 - Sunday, March 8 and <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/bandstand/" target="_blank">tickets </a>are on sale now (psst: military discounts are available)!<br />
<br />
<i>Bandstand </i>is a poignant and inspiring new American musical that explodes with infectious music and high-octane, heart-stopping dancing.<br />
<br />
It’s 1945. As America’s soldiers come home to ticker-tape parades and overjoyed families, Private First Class Donny Novitski, singer and songwriter, struggles to rebuild the life he left behind. When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation’s next great musical superstars, Donny sees a lifeline for himself and some fellow veterans that gives them the purpose they so desperately need. Together, they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Along the way, they discover the power of music to face the impossible, find their voice, and finally feel like they have a place to call home.<br />
<br />
Of course, my friends at Allied Media are letting me give away one pair of tickets to the opening night show Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:30 pm.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>For your chance to win, comment on this post telling me why you want to see Bandstand! An email address <i>must </i>be included in the body of your comment in order for me to contact you if your name is drawn. Winner will be contacted on Thursday, February 27.</b></div>

<b>Thoughts: </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
The journey taken across the pond to bring this story to us was a long one. In researching the simple question of "what <i>really </i>came first, the movie or the play?" I was led to an <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-17783302" target="_blank">article </a>stating that David Seidler began researching this story as early as the 1970's (he paused and later resumed work because the Queen Mother asked him not to pursue the project during her lifetime).<br />
<br />
A script reading for the play prompted a film director to take notice, once again putting the play on hold to make way for the 2010 film. The play eventually hit stages two years later, but only now are we Americans enjoying the privilege of seeing the play stateside: the North American debut happened in late 2019 in Chicago, and the DC debut is this week at the National Theatre followed by a stop in Hartford, CT. Here's to hoping more performances are to come.<br />
<br />
If you liked the movie, you will like the play. If you enjoy shows like <i>The Crown</i>, or even <i>Downton Abbey</i>, you will like the play. Amy and I watched and the movie 2 days ahead of coming to DC for the play and while I'd recommend allowing more space between viewings, it was fun to see the similarities (some scenes felt like they were lifted right from the screen) and differences (we loved that Lionel had more of a backstory in the play) throughout.<br />
<br />
If you're in or near DC, The King's Speech will run through Sunday, February 16. The production is recommended for ages 13 and up. Tickets are still available <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/" target="_blank">online</a>, or if you're feeling lucky, there are 20 $25 lottery seats available for each performance. Individuals must be present 2 hours before the show, with cash, to redeem the offer.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
In <a href="https://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2017/01/prk-update-surgeryday-3.html" target="_blank">January 2017</a>, I maxed out my FSA and gleefully dropped it all in one big, quick transaction: PRK surgery.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
PRK is a laser vision correction surgery similar to Lasik with one key difference: the corneas are "sanded away" prior to correction vs. having a flap cut, resulting in a longer healing time. I couldn't see at all for a <a href="https://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2017/01/prk-update-1-week-down.html" target="_blank">week </a>post-op.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sounds great, right? You can read in more detail about that journey starting <a href="https://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2017/01/my-prk-experience-why-i-changed.html" target="_blank">here</a>, but know that PRK was the right option for me vs. Lasik because my prescription was strong. I was so nearsighted that the first provider I consulted with wouldn't even guarantee me a full correction. There are other reasons to consider when deciding between Lasik and PRK, but the decision was made for me because of that factor.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I now get an eye exam annually for two main reasons:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: left;">It's important to stay on top of your eye needs and health. Don't neglect it!</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">I qualify for future corrective surgeries if needed if I do this</li>
</ol>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Onto the good stuff. 3 years post-op, how do I feel about the whole thing? How is my vision? Was it worth it?</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The short answer: <b>I would do it again in a heartbeat.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
How's your vision?</h4>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've had a slight prescription that I only need on occasion. It's so low (under -1.00) that correction so far isn't warranted, and in general, I see just fine without help.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
With correction, my vision is currently 20/15.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have invested in prescription glasses and sunglasses that I wear <b>only </b>as needed which is generally driving or watching a show (the glare from the stage lights is real!).</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The bottom line for me is this: when I wake up in the morning, I can see! I can roll out of bed and walk to the bathroom without worrying about tripping over something or walking into a wall. I can swim without worrying about losing glasses or contacts. As someone who grew up without being unable to enjoy these things, this is everything to me.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Do you have any side effects?</h4>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The biggest thing I noticed is that the "halos" at night did not go away like they usually do after several months for many patients. I can't say with certainty, but I think this is partially connected to my only other complaint: dry eyes.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A common side effect, especially for people with higher prescriptions like me, is dry eye. I've used every over the counter drop you can think of, tried other OTC/homeopathic remedies as recommended by my eye doctor, and even tried prescription Restasis last year. All of these provide some relief but haven't improved the overall problem.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At this year's checkup, we discussed the next step which would be trying punctal plugs. If we go down that road, I'll be sure to include all you need to know in my next update.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Was it worth it?</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I encourage everyone considering corrective vision surgery to consider their own needs and circumstances, but for me, the side effects are a small price to pay for both the convenience and safety. I have worn glasses or contacts almost my entire life (since before school), and not only had they become a nuisance, but I was beginning to feel unsafe driving - my contacts were drying out faster as I got older and I didn't have the peripheral vision I would have preferred with glasses on. Making sure I always have eye drops on me is no big deal in comparison to worrying about breaking my glasses or losing a contact and being stranded while blind.</div>

If you're thinking about cutting the cord it can feel a bit overwhelming at first. Here's what you need to know about cord-cutting before you make the switch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/shop/bekahchica" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheoUu3kOxHjNKsTrogXAW2ZE0tMoSx81ngZtmiosOqf3jfrjxl0zhc4PJewQRzPrvW5SwWYz-iY2px40VkoP5z_VHdLSWtRM07UZab-XT1M6dbS7WbU8Y2pLph95KxCUFQ0BAwNNScWls/s640/Untitled.png" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<h2>
Do Your Research</h2>
Before jumping into cord-cutting, you should take time to research what options are available to you. Create a list of all the television you watch, including both things that you would not be able to live without and things that are not mandatory but that you enjoy. Now compare that list with the number of streaming services you will need to subscribe to in order to keep watching the shows you want to see. It's important to know exactly what you'll need to pay for, not just to make it easier to get set up once you make the switch, but also to decide if moving to an all-streaming plan is the right decision in the first place.<br />
<h2>
Do the Math</h2>
Once you've determined how much it would cost you to subscribe to the cord-cutting services you are interested in you can begin the process of comparing to your cable bill. One of the major benefits of going all-streaming is the ability to more precisely cater to what you are and aren't paying for, so it is likely that streaming offers a discount, but not guaranteed. Knowing the relative cost of both options is crucial in determining which is the better option for you.<br />
<h2>
Get Your Tech Sorted</h2>
Today's streaming services allow you to watch your shows and movies in stunning HD quality video, but that's only true if you have <a href="https://www.techhive.com/article/3346020/cord-cutting-a-beginners-guide.html" rel="noopener" target="_blank">the right devices</a> to play them. Whether you're intending to use your computer or a video game console, it's important that you ensure that you'll be able to get all of the services you want to sign up for to work on your home theater. In addition to the devices, you'll be using for streaming, you should also make sure that you have a router and modem capable of handling HD-quality video streaming.<br />
<h2>
Watch for Bundle Deals and Specials</h2>
One way that you can further increase your savings when switching over from traditional television options to cord-cutting solutions is to look for bundling opportunities. For example, Hulu, Disney and ESPN all offer a single bundle where you gain access to all three streaming services at a fraction of the cost of signing up for each individually. While streaming is usually the cheaper route for your TV needs even without bundles, that's no reason you shouldn't look to save even more by paying less.<br />
<h2>
Unsubscribe When You Don't Need It</h2>
When you have a traditional cable package, it's likely that you'll be asked to enroll in a contract that runs for at least one year, if not longer. With streaming services you're not bound to these same contractual terms which makes it easier to ensure that you don't have to <a href="https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/5-cord-cutting-tips-for-new-cord-cutters/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">pay for unused services</a>. If you don't think you'll need a streaming service for a month or longer, you can likely pause your account then resume it when you need it at no added cost. If you love binging shows, a great trick is to only use one service at a time, then switch which is activated when you're ready to try shows on a new service.<br />
<h2>
Find a Reliable ISP</h2>
When <a href="https://starry.com/blog/cord-cutting-guide/beginners-guide-to-cutting-the-cable-cord" rel="noopener" target="_blank">cutting the cable cord</a> the most important thing is being able to trust your internet service. If you can't get consistent high-speed broadband from your ISP then everything else in your plan falls apart. When you're using your WiFi to stream to all your devices and double as your television, you need to know that you can count on your connection to remain consistent and quick even when multiple devices are in use.<br />
<br />
Cord-cutting looks set to be the future of televised content, with more and more consumers opting to get all of their TV off the internet. Streaming apps provide an easy-to-use solution for HD-quality video, all at a reduced cost. If you've been considering making the switch, there's no time like today. Start researching your cord-cutting options today and your wallet may just thank you tomorrow.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><div class='shareaholic-canvas' data-app='share_buttons' data-app-id='10809026'></div></div>Bekah Loves Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08144027421327457668noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-240454868494034167.post-42916606916712320292020-01-19T00:00:00.000-05:002020-01-19T00:00:09.880-05:00GIVEAWAY | The King's Speech<div align="right">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a December full of amazing shows at the National Theatre, I've been itching to go back for my first show of 2020 there and while I love musicals, next up is a <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/the-kings-speech/" target="_blank">play </a>that I'm so excited to see: <i>The King's Speech!</i></div>

This play inspired the <a href="https://amzn.to/2TnxprR" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Colin Firth film</a> of the same name!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I started the <a href="https://www.arbonne.com/pws/rebeccawalsh24772125/tabs/home.aspx" target="_blank">Arbonne </a>30 Days to Healthy Living Challenge in 2019 when I finally decided enough was enough. I was disgusted with my body and it was affecting more than just my vanity. During those 30 days, I posted weekly <a href="https://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2019/01/im-doing-arbonne-30-day-challenge.html" target="_blank">updates </a>but not a "final" results post.<br />
<br />
My reasoning was simple: I finished 30 days, but I'm wasn't finished. I continued 2019 in "maintenance mode" losing a few more pounds and becoming in better shape overall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.arbonne.com/pws/rebeccawalsh24772125/tabs/home.aspx" target="_blank"><img alt="Arbonne 30 days to healthy living" border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="1600" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw2WVzEEdeS5iG8SVj779MsfL5QUwNRt-ARJxjbmFO_osRKeJGgRm3RReH73aZJ0bvwq8u_Fm5if-d_Vm-e889m00nVHiuf_gb2cgHSwtcFgLDLr_y4PobJk5Oy_GP-dzZZ1lDptdRGMc/s640/Arbonne30-1yr.jpg" title="Arbonne 30 days to healthy living" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm in the midst of my second "true" 30 day program, and now seems as good a time as any to share the scale and non-scale victories from the program throughout 2019.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Non-scale victories</h3>
<ul>
<li>Fewer naps needed</li>
<li>Fewer headaches</li>
<li>Resting heart rate decreased</li>
<li>No "afternoon slump" at work</li>
<li>Fewer side effects during "that time" including no weight gained (I'd often gained 3+ lbs during my cycle and blamed the hormones)</li>
<li>Easier to exercise</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br />
I have no shame in saying I only did the program initially to lose weight. I wasn't looking for or expecting any of these extra benefits, but I'm so grateful for all these other victories that came as a result!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<h3>
Scale victories</h3>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">25 pounds lost (and kept off all year!)</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">15 overall inches lost</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: white;">Down one clothing size</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
<h3>
Observations</h3>
Progress was and is gradual. Month 1 was a complete nutritional overhaul. Month 2 was learning about how to modify the plan to make it sustainable for me. Month 3 introduced increased exercise. Even though the bulk of my weight was lost in month 1, I really started noticing a healthier looking body after month 2. I'm glad I built habits step by step as it has been so much easier for me to keep up instead of feeling overwhelmed by trying to do too much in the beginning.<br />
<br />
January is the easiest time for me personally to comply to the <a href="https://www.arbonne.com/pws/rebeccawalsh24772125/tabs/home.aspx" target="_blank">program</a> 100%, but programs run constantly throughout the year. I love the supportive community - I can always turn to someone else for recipe inspiration or any type of questions!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2019/01/arbonne30-week-3-results.html" target="_blank">Last year</a>, my eating was on the boring side just to keep things easy. I wasn't unhappy by any means, but I knew I'd want more variety this time around, and having both the experience and the community made it so much easier to find some new yummy meals. I was able to confidently scour Pinterest this time around and make modifications to recipes that caught my eye.<br />
<br />
I get that not everyone wants to see skin, so I won't post my full-body initial before and after pictures here, but if you're curious about those or have any questions at all, contact me! It's embarrassing for me to see where I was when I started, but the results are so worth it, and if it helps anyone else feel healthier or more comfortable in their own skin, I'm so happy to share!</div>

It was only when We got back together for NYE 2020 that I saw the things I'd written in jest the year before and realized...hey! I did it!<br />
<br />
<b>In 2019, I saw 30 shows.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibDFsxj32tXN_0RS17pXLOm0hPh3dii2ajFNMea5LB0D-0V2qcXbiy6B__sd9LbEj5FkCvSBX0JkvQRgK-cYA1_-4ILc5_rR7ODFHTjIYS56vAO1g1LmX2Su1CeqyLGsob60fJFBX2Mpk/s1600/2019-theatre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="1000" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibDFsxj32tXN_0RS17pXLOm0hPh3dii2ajFNMea5LB0D-0V2qcXbiy6B__sd9LbEj5FkCvSBX0JkvQRgK-cYA1_-4ILc5_rR7ODFHTjIYS56vAO1g1LmX2Su1CeqyLGsob60fJFBX2Mpk/s640/2019-theatre.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
I'm not loaded, I promise. Some shows were from a season subscription while others were free press tickets, a Broadway trip I won, or discounted Goldstar tickets.<br />
<br />
It was a great year for theatre and while I don't know that I can top that count in 2020, I do expect it will be another great year.<br />
<br />
Lots of new shows and revivals alike are lined up for their Broadway opening this year, and 4 in particular have caught my eye:<br />
<br />
<i>(Pro tip: go in spring just before the Tony's. Most shows will be open and you won't have to worry about ticket prices surging or shows closing after all the publicity)</i><br />
<br />
<h3>
Jagged Little Pill</h3>
<div>
Are you a true 90's kid if you aren't obsessed with this album? This is a jukebox musical featuring an original storyline with the music of Alanis Morissette, mostly from the titular album. I've been stalking this show since it's pre-Broadway run in Boston. It opened in December, and I can't wait!</div>
<br />
<div align="right">

<div>
<h3>
Diana </h3>
<div>
I was only 10 when Princess Diana lost her life and knew little of her. I'm excited to see her story on stage. Will this be gone in a season or the new <i>Evita</i>?<br />
<br />
An added perk for me is the participation of director Christopher Ashley who directed my all-time favorite show, <i>Come From Away</i>!</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<h3>
Six</h3>
<div>
This show was a smash on the West End and it's making its way stateside in 2020. It's a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII with a pop twist, and exactly the type of creativity I've been yearning for more of on Broadway.<br />
<br />
While movie adaptations and jukebox scores have their place and can be amazing, one can only take so many at a time!</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<h3>
The Music Man</h3>
<div>
One of two revivals on my list, how can you possibly say no to a fun, classic show that features Hugh Jackman as the lead?<br />
<br />
While I'm bummed that this show is forcing successful fan favorite <i>Beetlejuice </i>out of it's home theatre, I don't think that will be enough to discourage fans of the musical or Jackman from seeing this anticipated revival!</div>

<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>Who: </b>Amy & I<br />
<b>What:</b> <i>Jesus Christ Superstar</i> - the touring revival of Andrew Lloyd Weber's <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ms2rdG" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">1970 rock opera</a><br />
<b>When:</b> December 2019<br />
<b>Where: </b>Hippodrome Theatre, Baltimore, MD<br />
<b>Why: </b>What's the buzz, tell me what's a-happening...<br />
<b>Thoughts:</b><br />
<br />
My first exposure to <i>Jesus Christ Superstar</i> was the <a href="https://amzn.to/2MoZiLW" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">live concert starring John Legend in 2018</a>. While these Broadway telecasts are notoriously bad (and yet, I continue to watch), this one...wasn't.<br />
<br />
It was good. Good enough that 4 days after it aired, a new <a href="https://ustour.jesuschristsuperstar.com/" target="_blank">50th anniversary national touring production</a> was announced. Good enough that 2 weeks after it aired, it was what the audience was discussing all around me as I sat in the Vivian Beaumont theatre waiting for the matinee of <i>My Fair Lady</i> to begin.<br />
<br />
The tour launched this past October, making it to Baltimore this past December, and...<b>wow</b>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SdDeFnVNPu2_YviKyzpwo01ZZ5RkNB21dc-mHpeMznFa7JTbuRwKpNwu7Ctdl2xxdpVzxmuf7Ho2LMuYjyPebqPMehBKnW2ZyeDMsLP3YU7qKhkFG-sGSTQvG_dt41K4z94X4U1fWio/s1600/jcs-curtain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1143" data-original-width="1600" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SdDeFnVNPu2_YviKyzpwo01ZZ5RkNB21dc-mHpeMznFa7JTbuRwKpNwu7Ctdl2xxdpVzxmuf7Ho2LMuYjyPebqPMehBKnW2ZyeDMsLP3YU7qKhkFG-sGSTQvG_dt41K4z94X4U1fWio/s640/jcs-curtain.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Admittedly, I don't have a theatrical production to compare to, but this production was stunning. Full of symbolism, creativity, and insane talent, I am so glad it was my last show of 2019 because it truly ended the year with a bang!<br />
<br />
I'm always cautious to not give anything away in my reviews, but I will say this: Jesus got a standing ovation. After a song in the middle of the show. That kind of thing does not happen. Baltimore is generous with standing ovations post-show (not nearly as generous as DC who stands for anyone who sets foot on a stage, but still), but to get on your feet and cheer mid-show? You know it's gotta be good!<br />
<a href="https://ustour.jesuschristsuperstar.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><br /></a>
<a href="https://ustour.jesuschristsuperstar.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Get to a performance near you.</a> Enjoy the 90 minutes, no intermission momentum. Check out the insane bios of the cast in your Playbill. Indie musician? Check. Broadway performers? Check. <i>America's Next Top Model</i> contestant? Yeah, they've got that too. I tend to follow one or two performers after each show if someone catches my eye, but this time? I followed the whole freaking cast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hpo8Vc6JlFs/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hpo8Vc6JlFs?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
JCS was my final show of 2019 and I can definitely say it wrapped up my 30-show year with a bang! While it seems like a show that can be controversial, the theatre was packed and you could hear a pin drop at the end - the production is that good. I hope you have the opportunity to see it in a city near you!<br />

<div>
I rang in the year a few blocks away with Sean and our amazing neighbors. Between the abundance of <a href="https://amzn.to/36c5s9U" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sparkle</a>, the nostalgia of last year's silly resolutions (I achieved most of mine, yay!), and the laughs had while playing <a href="https://jackboxgames.com/" target="_blank">Jackbox games</a> (how did I not know about these until now!?), I'd say the night was a success!</div>

The girls decided to have some fun with coordinated <a href="https://amzn.to/36c5s9U" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sequin dresses.</a> They were a $40 Amazon Prime purchase that fit all of us (sizes M-XXL are all being worn here, mostly true to size), in an abundance of colors - we represent 6 of the 12 available <i>(taller girls, take note: it will be <b>short</b>!). </i></div>

As I scrolled through Google photos scouting for potential holiday card photos, I couldn't believe all of the memories made this year. So many times I had to stop and say "wow, that was this year!?" or share with my friends, saying "remember when...?"<br />

<b>Who: </b>My neighbors & I</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>What: </b><i>Once on This Island</i>, the touring production of the 2018 revival</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>When: </b>December 2019</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>Thoughts:</b> If I'm counting right, I saw 30 shows in 2019. I can say with absolute certainty that <i>Once on This Island</i> was the most magical theatre experience of the year. I had never heard of it prior to the revival but a little bit of research and I knew I <b>had </b>to see it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6GHFCzBLtLvNVPl_oskTzr1JutbhlUev-Wf0c1rxCd68SdVnKS0y1CGuxq57PzwAvl15qDmcXa9mlp59_ma0FOiYcbbKsLIN20Gwl-2GbdsHsItkpEPIa2dNU_EjmMtSf5Apy81U6o8k/s1600/IMG_20191207_214204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6GHFCzBLtLvNVPl_oskTzr1JutbhlUev-Wf0c1rxCd68SdVnKS0y1CGuxq57PzwAvl15qDmcXa9mlp59_ma0FOiYcbbKsLIN20Gwl-2GbdsHsItkpEPIa2dNU_EjmMtSf5Apy81U6o8k/s640/IMG_20191207_214204.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
While not staged in the round like on Broadway, the tour provides it's own immersion most notably through onstage seating. For ~$20, I figured the view would be bad but took the gamble due to the uniqueness of the experience.<br />
<br />
Guys.<br />
<br />
It was the coolest thing ever! Actors arrive on stage shortly after the doors open for a pre-show experience only those sitting on stage can truly appreciate. The set is a beach littered heavily after a storm, and characters interact with each other, discussing the damage and cleaning up until it's truly time for the <a href="https://amzn.to/2Zo2T28" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">show </a>to begin. The view was always phenomenal and it often felt like the performers connected with the audience.<br />
<br />
The show itself is short and sweet (90 minutes, no intermission). That doesn't allow it to dig as deep as other shows, but it's really more about the experience. Visually, I couldn't stop noticing and admiring all the design elements of both the set and costumes - it was so creative and relevant!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I'm hoping the <a href="https://www.onceonthisisland.com/tour/" target="_blank">tour </a>comes to Baltimore or DC next season so I can see it again. If it's coming to your town, don't miss it! The onstage seats are a steal and will be one of your coolest theatre experiences!</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm usually enthusiastically ready to get our cards together the first week of December, but this year was a near fail. That quick turnaround was more valuable than ever. We didn't even have a photo until a colleague snapped one at our 12/20 work party! Thankfully, cards were ready and mailed barely before Christmas. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For those of you who received one on time, yay! For those of you who will randomly receive them by NYE...womp womp. Sorry. I'll do better next year.</div>

<div>
For those of you whose address I don't have, think of this card as yours. It means a lot to me that you're here reading along with me. Happy Holidays!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Before I saw <i>Jersey Boys</i> for <a href="http://www.bekahlovesblog.com/2017/07/jersey-boys.html" target="_blank">the first time</a>, I would have told you that the Four Seasons was a hotel.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When the tour came to Baltimore a few years ago, I went out of curiosity. It was a Tony award winner (and Grammy, and Olivier winner), so it had to be good, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/jersey-boys-19/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="946" data-original-width="1600" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3hywQybIxz3qf0lE2qX1VbpQwaNITwAWgTwZyQ_Sd1T-_qQjH2Cm8lvMv8zqQteXgc2JlcQTgZ290RT9zSFuM7-kfIKBo4DnAKlRi5-y2TAY0aUGN7096lrcg2WYSrgdQtSWmEG1stZ8/s640/k-Dawn-F.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I went with my mother in law, fully expecting she'd appreciate a show about a band who rose to fame in the 60's more than I could. I was pleasantly surprised as I realized I was familiar with a fair amount of the <a href="https://amzn.to/2Ezp8sb" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">catalog</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was <i>Bye Bye Baby</i>, which I'd heard Liam Neeson attribute to the Bay City Rollers in <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JIES4Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=bekahsresolve-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B001JIES4Q&linkId=7ff758ccc9d3daba63c3bbd37d837c38" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Love Actually.</a></i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was <i>Can't Take My Eyes off You</i>, the song that made me swoon when Patrick serenaded Kat in the teen flick <i><a href="https://amzn.to/2MaOVuZ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">10 Things I Hate About You.</a></i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was <i>December, 1963</i>, the song you hear...everywhere.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Sure, the songs were from the 60's, but they were classics so strong that they'd found new life in my generation. I had a blast that night and was thrilled for a second dose of Frankie, Tommy, Nick, and Bob when I heard the production was nearby at DC's <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/jersey-boys-19/" target="_blank">National Theatre</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/jersey-boys-19/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1122" data-original-width="1600" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGMRuJ3uJ87z4xzQkfsYvKR6AWSseAU9Tl8BgktokLkGUZXFASn4obfmobneB866LmC0Ud3zqXtyzN6M4E7SneIhaBUblGKeckJM6_6M4xnMnw9Wyyv0XMiXXqN-hUAufBLAiWouRTa2w/s640/i-Walk-Like-a-Man.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I attended opening week, Xennial friend in tow, and was pleased to see an age-diverse crowd (I frequently lament that I'm the youngest audience member when I attend theatre productions). In fact, the teenagers a few row in front of me were dancing in their seats when the opening number began. A woman to our right squealed every time a number she knew played. Three different Boomers in front of us whipped out their phones to try and record <i>Big Girls Don't Cry</i> (while I appreciate the enthusiasm, a friendly reminder that recording performances is a no-no).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I had a pretty sheltered upbringing, similar to my guest. When I asked if she was familiar with any of the songs post-show, she said:<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"Personally I heard many of those songs but didn’t know it was The Four Seasons or even the same band until I saw the <a href="https://amzn.to/2S7Ia0I" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">movie</a>. They’re just popular songs I guess. For even a sheltered girl like me."</i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://amzn.to/2Ezp8sb" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1143" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEita8pu302eyqbmdUQdfwh1N0OGGTxeF_RefwUMBpN14ZM7H2yHtEyfdLlmYSmMqu7VEwMfr-P6CRYq6dl-5nf_jFJNTRO0oUZmy2yZPBaY9BsVrIwvivGAqyYy3Ccus1Qbb9O_05XQM0o/s640/JB.jpg" width="456" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Whether born in 63, 83, or 2003, <i>Jersey Boys</i> is a fun crowd-pleaser that generations can enjoy together, but keep in mind that it is recommended for ages 12+ due to language and mature content. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you're looking for some quality time with family over this holiday break, the show will be in town through Sunday, January 5. <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/jersey-boys-19/" rel="nofollow" style="font-weight: bold;" target="_blank">Grab your tickets and enjoy!</a><b> </b>Or, take your chances with the ticket lottery: Two hours prior to all <i>Jersey Boys</i> show times, individuals may submit their names in person to be drawn to purchase up to two tickets at $25 per ticket. The days have been racing by as they always seem to from Labor Day until Christmas. It's been hectic, but fun!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
The national tour of <i>Aladdin </i>made it's way through Baltimore. This was my third time seeing it (previously on Broadway and in Chicago) and this time, I brought my mom and siblings along as a birthday/Christmas gift to them. It was such a fun night out!</div>

3. Daily ritual</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I might be late to the party on this, but how did I not know Amazon has their own clothing brand now?! A lot of my basic T's were getting to the worn, pilling stage and I knew it was time to replace them. Amazon has the basics in multiple weights, styles, and all the essential neutral colors in the softest fabrics — and with reasonable prices! My personal favorites so far are this <a href="https://amzn.to/37u9QlF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jersey Elbow-Sleeve Boat Neck Shirt</a> and the <a href="https://amzn.to/2rgQDDo" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Supersoft Terry Short-Sleeve Shirt</a>. I've got a handful more on my wish list.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
One of my favorite local theatres, <a href="https://www.olneytheatre.org/whats-playing/singin-rain" target="_blank">Olney Theatre Center</a>, is currently performing <i>Singin' in the Rain</i>. I haven't seen the film since I was a kid and wasn't sure what to expect, but it was such a strong performance (just like every Olney show I've ever seen), and I was stunned when it actually rained on stage for the titular song! If you're nearby, the show runs until January 5. Some performances have discounted tickets available on <a href="https://www.goldstar.com/signup?p=F6308298RP" target="_blank">Goldstar</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I struggle every year to find good boots and generally order multiple pairs before I find something that works for me. I ordered these toffee leather <a href="http://singin%27%20in%20the%20rain/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lucky brand booties</a> on sale and loved them so much, I ordered them in black as well! My office mate was curious so she ordered a pair and also ended up ordering a second! They're <b>so </b>comfortable and go with everything.</div>

<b>Thoughts: </b>My first viewing of RENT was the <a href="https://amzn.to/2OlDVLJ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2005 film</a>. My second was a community theatre production nearly ten years later. I was thrilled to finally see a full, professional production and it did not disappoint! It's now been over 20 years since RENT's Broadway debut but the story holds up as well as ever—it's easy to see how it is still relevant today. At the same time, there's a huge nostalgia factor for me personally as a 90's kids. The costumes always make me grin, especially the ensemble member wearing JNCOs!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Fresh off its Tony-nominated hit Broadway run, Tony Award winner John Leguizamo’s one-man play <i>LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS</i> is inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American history books. Known as modern theatre’s most prolific Latino playwright, Leguizamo embarks on an outrageously funny, frenzied search to find a Latin hero for his son’s school history project. From a mad recap of the Aztec empire to stories of unknown Latin patriots of the Revolutionary War and beyond, Leguizamo breaks down the 3,000 years between the Mayans and Pitbull into 110 irreverent and uncensored minutes above and beyond his unique style. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Don’t miss the show The New York Times calls “a surprisingly poignant one-man play that slyly poses sharp and timely questions of what culturally defines American identity and who, in the nationalistic age of Trump, has ‘the right’ to be here.”</div>

<i>In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s <b>RENT </b>continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. Now, this Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A reimagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters — love.</i></div>

<b>Thoughts:</b><br />
I may or may not have rolled my eyes when I first heard this show would be on Broadway. I'm not that familiar with <a href="https://amzn.to/323snlV" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Jimmy Buffett </a>and didn't have high overall expectations of the show...at least not enough to give it a try on the Big White Way.<br />
<br />
I figured the touring version was worth giving a try and am happy to say it exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations! Simply put, it's a fun, happy ... "escape" show! There's lots of funny one liners, easy to follow storylines, and audience participation is encouraged (AKA it's totally fine to <a href="https://amzn.to/323snlV" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sing along</a>)! They also managed to sneak in one of my favorite things...a tap number!<br />
<br />
It's not too late to grab your <a href="https://amzn.to/2M57HEc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">flip flops</a> and enjoy your own Escape to Margaritaville...it's still in DC at the <a href="http://thenationaldc.com/events/category/series/escape-to-margaritaville/" target="_blank">National Theatre</a> through October 13!<br />
